Registered Midwives are autonomous primary health care providers, obligated to self-assessing and completing professional development and skills expansion. In accordance with bylaw 18, all members shall ensure that they work within their educational preparation, level of competence, and scope of practice. It is recommended that members maintain records of course and/or training completion.
Registered midwives shall complete training where necessary in order to gain, enhance or maintain clinical and professional knowledge, skills and judgement relative to their midwifery practice in general and as they relate to the following, as contained in the Appendix of The Midwifery Regulations:
- prescribe or administer a drug that is a member of any category of drugs set out in Table 1;
- order, perform and interpret a diagnostic test that is set out in Table 2; and,
- perform and interpret an invasive procedure that is set out in Table 3.
Where courses do not require council approval or recertification on a regular basis, training or educational opportunities may:
- Be offered by a health care facility, accredited educational institution, professional association, or government agency.
- Be facilitated by a qualified health professional and/or experienced clinician.
- Include theoretical and clinical practice content.
- Be self-directed, including observational learning methods, where appropriate.
